Buy the Dip phone case for traders and investors

Stock Market Gifts for Him: Boyfriend, Husband or Dad

If you are here, someone in your life talks about the market constantly and you have understood roughly none of it. Good news: you do not need to. You only need to know which kind of market person he is.

That distinction matters more than any product on this list, so start there.

First, work out which one he is

  • The active trader. Multiple screens, awake before the open, uses words like "setup" and "stop". Buy for the desk and the early mornings.
  • The long-term investor. Checks quarterly, talks about compounding, owns index funds. Buy books and things that last.
  • The enthusiast. Follows it closely, trades a little, enjoys the culture and the memes. Buy something with personality.

Under $50

A phone case with an inside joke. Works best for the enthusiast, because it is the thing he will hold more than any other gift you could buy. Buy the Dip is the reference every market person gets instantly. Not Financial Advice suits the one who sends stock tips to the group chat and Diamond Hands suits the one who never sells. Each fits 34 iPhone and Samsung Galaxy models, and the Tough version of Buy the Dip adds a green bull.

A hardcover notebook, or a journal that does the arithmetic. If he keeps a trading journal he will use the notebook daily, and if he does not, he probably should. For the numbers rather than the notes, our trading journal spreadsheet works out his expectancy and profit factor and shows whether his edge sits in the trades he closes same-day or the ones he holds overnight. Nine dollars, and it arrives by email, which also rescues you if you have left this late.

An insulated flask. Boring, correct, used every morning.

A book. The Psychology of Money for the long-term investor, and it is readable even if he is not that serious. Trading in the Zone for the active trader. Reminiscences of a Stock Operator for the one who likes history.

$50 to $200

Noise-cancelling headphones. For anyone who needs to hear a Fed announcement over a household.

A desk mat. Safe, tasteful, immediately visible every day.

A monitor arm. Unglamorous and genuinely appreciated by anyone with more than one screen.

A sunrise alarm clock. If he trades US markets from another timezone, this is a kindness.

Over $200

A monitor. The single biggest upgrade to his actual day.

A GMT watch. A second timezone is functional for him and looks like you paid attention.

Three mistakes worth avoiding

Do not buy anything bullish. No charging bull statues, no "to the moon" decor. He may be short this week. Gear that picks a direction gets quietly retired.

Do not gift him a stock. It feels thoughtful and it is a small trap: now his gift has a price that can fall, and he has to have feelings about it in front of you.

Do not buy a course. It reads as a comment on his ability.

If you are shopping for Christmas

Anything made to order has a production window on top of shipping. Our Christmas guide lists the order-by dates by country. The short version is that in the US the first week of December is the real deadline, not the third, and outside the US it is early November.
