Rekt Meaning: What It Means to Get Rekt in Crypto and Trading

Rekt is internet slang for "wrecked", and in crypto and trading it means you took a loss so big that the position, or sometimes the whole account, is gone. You'll see it in chat as "got rekt", "rekt again" or a single word under someone's screenshot of a liquidation notice, and it's usually said with a mix of humour and sympathy, because almost everyone who trades long enough has been there.

This guide covers where the word came from, what it means in crypto compared with stocks and options, how people use it in a group chat, and the habits traders lean on so it happens to them less often.

Where "rekt" comes from

The word started in online gaming and meme culture, where "get rekt" was the taunt you typed after beating someone badly. The misspelling is deliberate, in the same family as "pwned", and it keeps the word playful rather than serious. Crypto Twitter and trading forums picked it up because markets that can move 20% in a day produce a steady supply of beaten opponents, and the word fit the mood far better than a polite "I made a loss".

The spelling still tells you the tone. "Wrecked" sounds like a news headline about a crash, while "rekt" sounds like a friend in the group chat who has just watched your trade go wrong and wants you to know they've done the same thing.

What rekt means in crypto

In crypto, rekt usually means liquidated. Many exchanges let traders open futures positions with 10x, 20x or even higher leverage, and leverage shrinks the distance between "a normal move against me" and "my position no longer exists". With 20x leverage, a move of roughly 5% against the trade is enough to wipe out the margin behind it, and the exchange closes the position automatically, often a little before that point because of maintenance margin and fees.

That forced close is the classic way to get rekt. The trader may have been right about the direction in the end, but the market only had to wobble the wrong way for a few minutes first. This is why liquidation screenshots get posted with the single word "rekt" and nothing else, since everyone reading already knows the story.

The word also gets used for the other side of a sudden move. When the price spikes and leveraged short sellers are forced out in a rush, you'll see "shorts got rekt", which is crypto's casual way of describing a short squeeze.

What rekt means in stocks and options

Stock traders use rekt too, though the routes there are different. Options are the most common one, because a call or put that expires worthless takes the whole premium with it, and a trade that looked fine on Friday can be rekt by Monday's opening gap. Earnings are another, when a stock drops sharply overnight and there is no chance to exit in between.

Margin accounts add a third path. If a leveraged position falls far enough, the broker asks for more money or starts selling for you, and our guide to what a margin call is walks through how that works with an example.

Someone who is simply down on a long-term holding usually wouldn't call themselves rekt. The word suggests the damage is done or close to irreversible, rather than a paper loss that might recover.

How to use rekt in chat

Most of the time it's self-deprecating, which is the safest way to use it. A few common shapes:

  • "Longed the top, got rekt." The trader bought right before the drop and is owning it.
  • "Rekt." A one-word reply to someone's loss screenshot, which reads as sympathy among friends.
  • "Shorts are getting rekt." A comment on a sharp move up that is forcing short sellers out.
  • "Fully rekt" or "rekt again". The same idea with the volume turned up.

Be careful about aiming it at someone who has just lost money that matters to them. Between friends who trade together it's a shared joke, while from a stranger in the replies it can land as gloating, and people remember which one you were.

Rekt vs bagholder vs paper hands

These three get mixed up because they often show up in the same story. A bagholder is still holding a position that has fallen a long way, hoping it comes back. Paper hands describes someone who sold early under pressure, often right before the price recovered. Rekt is what you call the moment the loss became real and painful.

They can happen in sequence, which is the part worth noticing. A trader chases a move out of FOMO, becomes a bagholder when it reverses, and finally gets rekt when they capitulate at the low or the exchange liquidates them.

How traders try not to get rekt

Nobody avoids losses entirely, and nothing here is a prediction about any market. What experienced traders talk about instead is keeping a single bad trade from becoming a disaster, and the habits are fairly consistent:

  • Size positions so one loss can't end the account. Many traders cap the risk on any trade at a small slice of their capital.
  • Know the liquidation price before entering. With leverage, that number matters more than the target.
  • Use less leverage than the exchange offers. The maximum available is a limit, not a recommendation.
  • Write every trade down. A journal shows whether the rekt moments share a pattern, such as late-night trades or adding to losers, and our guide on how to keep a trading journal covers what to record. The $9 Edge Journal does the maths for you.

If you're new to crypto in particular, the US regulator CFTC has a plain-English advisory on the risks of virtual currency trading that is worth ten minutes before you touch leverage.

Frequently asked questions

What does rekt mean in text or chat?

It means "wrecked". In a trading chat it means someone took a heavy loss, and in gaming it means someone was beaten badly.

What does rekt mean in crypto?

It usually means a leveraged position was liquidated or a trade lost most of its value, often in a fast move that left no time to exit.

Is rekt an insult?

It depends on who says it. Said about yourself or between friends it's a joke, but aimed at a stranger who just lost money it reads as mocking.

What is the difference between rekt and liquidated?

Liquidated is the technical term for the exchange or broker closing your position. Rekt is the slang for how that feels, and it also covers big losses that didn't involve leverage at all.

For more of the words traders use, our trader slang guide covers the 20 terms beginners get wrong most often, and if your group chat says "rekt" more than it would like to admit, our phone cases for traders carry lines they'll recognise on sight.
